I'm new to brewing and am curious about using clarifiers. From what I'm reading, it removes cloudiness/haze but doesn't seem to affect the quality of the beer. Is it true that it is used solely for aesthetics and isn't something you need to use?

They also help stabilize the beer for aging. But are they necessary? No. Just one of the many many tiny things you need to do to make GREAT beer.

You don't need them for taste really. They're mostly for competitions where clarity is a judged factor. If your're just drinking it, don't worry.

If you use a highly flocculant yeast strain, clarifiers aren't really necessary. Let it sit in primary till it reaches FG,then let it sit another 3-7 days to clean up & settle out more. at that point,it should be clear or slightly misty. By the time they're in bottles a few days, they'll finish settling out clear.
