I want to ask for a thermometer for Christmas. I want something that is fairly accurate but not too expensive (looking around $50) Do you guys have any suggestions?

You didn't say what type of thermometer: floating, probe, digital, K-type thermoprobe, etc. Anyway, I have this handheld thermocouple type-k probe:

If you're looking for something with a probe, I've been having good luck with this:

No problem so far with probe in mash and boil . . .
Edit:
Biggest disadvantage is that it is not calibratable.
It reads about one degree below my calibratabe thermometer, so I take that into account.

I think I paid $10 for one at my local supermarket. It matches my very expensive NIST certified unit almost exactly. If I screw up and break it, no big whoop.

Its cheap and never lies. You can submerge it and not have to worry about any electronics.

How long do those probe thermos usually take to get a reading? I'm seriously considering getting one if they are quick.

Someone recommended this thermometer to me, its only $13 and reads dead on with the ice water test and boiling water. Used it on probably 6-8 batches so far.
