I want to use filtered water from my brita pitcher, but isnt there a chance that there could be mold etc in the filter or the pitcher itself? How could I sanitize one of these?

It depends on how old the filter is. You could put in a new filter, but those Brita's are awfully slow. I keep one in my fridge for drinking water and you would have to plan on a couple of hours if you're doing a full boil with a 5 gallon batch.

I imagine you'd sanitize both tanks in the pitcher the same way you'd sanitize any other piece of brewing equipment; soak it in Starsan, idophor, etc. with the filter removed.

Then again, it shouldn't be an issue because the water's been filtered which should remove bacteria as well.
