Are the seals the same for a 3 gallon corny as a 5 gallon? I may be purchasing a few 3 gallon corny's used, and want to make sure that replacement parts are available.

also second question if I put 2.5 gallons of fermented beer in a 3 gallon corny and purged with co2, would be ok?

3 gallon corny kegs are widely known to cause off-flavours in beer. Dude, I would definitely not use them. If you want, I will happily trade you some spare 5 gal corny kegs for those horrible 3 gal ones you have.

;)

Seriously, yes the seals are the same. And there are no problems with under-filling a keg provided it was purged with CO2 first. Just remember that it will carb-up quicker with the greater headspace, though.

I've never heard that before. Is the difference significant and at what volume (ie. 4 gal in 5 gal keg) do you think this becomes an issue needing attention?

Unless you are using the quick-carb method (i.e. shaking a keg to dissolve CO2), you won't over-carb a keg with extra headspace. But if you carbonate from pressurizing the headspace of the keg, the lower volume of beer and higher volume of CO2 means that the carbonation occurs a bit more quickly. I have never checked, but it is probably proportional to the volume of beer.
