My future father in law has been intrigued by my beer brewing, and he was interested in picking up the hobby.

He's more of a wine guy, and wanted to borrow my stir plate to make a starter.

I haven't seen any wine recipes yet that use starters, but I want to make sure I steer him in the right direction.

What should I tell him to make the starter with? (Sugar?)

I don't know about wine pitching rates, but I've made cider with wine yeast. Wine yeast usually comes dry in those little packets. 5 grams is more than you'd probably need for a 5 gallon batch. They're like $1 at my lhbs so I always pitch a couple of them to be safe.

Use some of the juice cut with a little water (25% vol) and warmed to 35-40 degrees celsius.
