I did my second all grain batch today and had a preboil gravity of 1.041 with 9.25 gallon volume. Post boil was 1.056. Grain bill was just over 11lbs and total water was 10.45 gallons. Beersmith says I had a mash efficiency of 97% and a brew house efficiency of 80%. What is the difference between these two numbers? Which is my "real" efficiency?

Original quote from AZ IPA:

mash efficiency is the conversion of your grains to sugars (you should be able to get above 90%).

brewhouse efficiency is usually your overall efficiency (% of available sugar that makes it into the fermenter).

check out braukaiser.com for great information on efficiency! :mug:

FYI, Kai Troester (Braukaiser) is a master at experiments, check out his site--great info.
