I know this has been asked before and I did do a search on here first, but I found conflicting responses.

My question is: when a magazine like Zymurgy says "Ingredients for 6.25 gallons", is this preboil or postboil volume?

Note that the recipe I'm trying to follow does not say "batch size", it says "Ingredients for...".

TIA.

That's post boil. You may ask why such an arbitrary number. They're calculating for typical losses due to trub and siphoning dead space. They are shooting for a finished beer volume of approximately 5 gallons.
