do i need a hole saw, or can i just use drill bits made for metal? I have bits, not spade bits, up to 1" in diameter. ( cutting through fullsize fridge for perlick faucets.) Wood backing a necessity as well?

If you have bits large enough for your shanks then go for it. I wouldn't use a spade bit unless you want to break the bit or your wrist.

As far as a wood backer you may or may not need to use one, it depends on the inside of the fridge.
