I recently purchased a brew kit that contained two ale pails, one of which is a bottling bucket that contains a spigot on the bottom and the other is a plain fermentation bucket. However, I also purchased a glass carboy that I would like to use as my secondary. My question is... can I use the "bottling bucket" as my primary so I can use the spigot to transfer the beer to my secondary and not use a siphon? Is there a benefit to using a siphon? I'm aware that I will need to use the siphon to get the beer out of the secondary, but is it advantageous to use the spigot?
