Would checking the FG be the same if you were to put the hydrometer into the initial fermenter and let it float vs. pulling a sample with the wine thief which the sample is extracted deeper into the beer. Thanks.

You'd get the same reading, but most don't put their hydrometer in the fermenter for all sorts of reasons. It's hard to get out and hard to read whether on a carboy or bucket. Plus, you don't get to taste the sample that you pull out.

You might get the same reading- but you might not. Krausen would coat the hydrometer, making it hard to read as well as a bit heavier so it would have to be removed, cleaned, sanitized, and put in the beer.

It's easier to just use a turkey baster and pull out a sample that it would be to do all that. Plus, hydrometers are fragile! During active fermentation, it would get knocked all around (have you ever seen the activity during fermentation- it's wild!) and possibly break if it bumps the side of the fermenter.

When I did this the fermentation has stopped so just a few bubbles on the surface. The hydrometer stays pretty still, it's just the small bubble cling age to the meter that throws me for a loop. Why take a dry sample instead of one you can taste.

Thanks
