It looks like I will be ready to go all grain next weekend. I am thinking of doing a SMASH because I want to keep it simple and get to know my ingredients better. I was playing around on Beersmith tonight and came up with the following. I would really like some constructive criticism as I know very little about making recipes, I just know I like many beers with pale 2 row and simco hops smell great! Mash temp was chosen because I have read that mashing at a lower temp resulted in higher attenuation and a more clean beer.

That will be a very hoppy beer.Good luck on your first all grain.I am by no means a pro ,but I would use some specialty grains just for added flavor. If you want a light hoppy IPA maybe some crystal 20l.

That would kind of defeat the purpose of a SMaSH.

If you want to have it maltier for balance, you could mash a little higher (no more than 154°F)

Or you could do the old "legal cheat" for a SMaSH and toast some of your 2-row ;)

If you are going to do a SMaSH the idea is to do it with out any extras to learn what the base flavour is like.
Then do additions or adjustments to learn what difference it makes.

I think it looks great. Simcoe is a great hop. My only suggestion is, if you have the hops, would be to move the 45 and 30 minutes later in the boil, to maybe 15-0 minutes. You will probably have to compensate by adding more at 60 minutes, but I think you will appreciate the flavor and aroma from those additions more.

Good luck on you first all grain.

At 55.9 IBU's and a 1.071 OG you are way into the uber bitter range, I would pull your IBU's into the 35-40 range for a more balanced beer, or 40-45 for more hoppy smash....you want to get a taste of the malt and the hop, at least for your first SMaSH. And I wouldn't toast any grain for your first one either, just let it be, and concentrate on you AG process...and with a simple smash like this, it's almost like doing an extracct kit for the first time, it should be pretty foolproof.

Have fun :mug:

Thanks for all the suggestions. Based on them I changed up the recipe to look like this so I should get a better malty balance while maintaining the integrity of a true SMASH:

I had everything at home but the grain. Just ordered it from Midwest, hopefully their crush is good and it makes it so I can brew on Friday.
