I finally got my Monster Mill this week. All it took was one use with a drill for me to want to motorize it with a dedicated motor. Hopefully i will build it this weekend and document it here. I just wanted to get some advice on motors. After looking through all of the available threads, it seems like a 1/3 hp motor will be fit for the job.

Does anyone have any opinions on this particular motor?

I can get it for a decent price and get it in time to work on it for the weekend.

Thanks for any input.

I've got a 1 hp motor with a 10:1 gear reducer on it. Some might call that overkill though... :D

Do you mind linking to your gear reducer? Most links i have poured over in this forum are dead.

Here's one you can check out on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/161117839812?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 and another with lower RPM which means you can use a smaller pulley on the mill side. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3-4-HP-GE-115-Volt-Electric-Motor-1ph-3450-rpm-5-8-shaft-3-16-key-CCW-rot/121118184058?_trksid=p2047675.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D333005%26algo%3DRIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D18243%26meid%3D2193998414003538821%26pid%3D100009%26prg%3D8344%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D380751159050%26

And here's a gearmotor about the right size if you want to go with direct drive. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BODINE-1-50-HP-GEARMOTOR-115-VAC-12-1-RATO-140-RPM-NCI-11D3-/331050312134?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d1422e1c6

If you Google "Motorized Grain Mill" you will find plenty of links to guide you along. Here's one of them. http://byo.com/stories/item/1166-motorize-your-grain-mill-projects

The Grainger website has info on how to determine pulley sizes. Pulley's are also known as Sheaves

I hope this helps.

I have a barley crusher hooked up to a1/2 hp motor with a 9:1 pulley system to get the RPMs down to within the correct range. I'm thinking about renting to the local rock quarry for use. I seriously think it'll handle about anything I put in it. I think 1/3 hp will be sufficient.
