So in my first 2 batches I pitched just one pack of active dry yeast and for my third batch I pitched 3 packs of wyeast 1056. I didn't notice the yeast appearing to be more active than any of the other batches yet there was 3 times the amount. Is this normal?

It's really all relative as with a bigger beer you need more yeast but the time it take for the yeast to take off is directly related to the OG of the beer and the pitching rate, just because you pitched more yeast does not mean fermentation will begin faster unless of course you over pitch a smaller beer.

Activity began at the same time but I just didn't notice a larger krausen or activity lengthening.
