Just brewed my first batch of home brew, an irish red. I measured the correct amount of water but when i siphoned into my fermentation jug i only had about 4/5 of a gallon. (its a one gallon kit). Im sure i will still get decent beer but what happened to the amount of liquid?

It's an extract kit, right? The excess water probably just boiled off. If it's extract, there's a fixed amount of fermentable sugar, do you should be fine topping it off to the full gallon. Do you have the recipe handy?

Yep like Jon said,

That amount boiled off. So you can either keep it as is and have a stronger red ale, or top off with water. (which I'd boil and let cool to room temp before adding).

Yeah it was an extract kit. I did add a little extra water to bring it closer to a gallon. Is it absolutely a must to boil it before adding?

Nah, if you would drink the water you added then it's probably fine. I used to top off with water straight from the tap all the time.
