What types of yeast, if any, could be stored in the freezer. And how long would they stay good?

Just to be clear, you are talking about glycerine storage right? Just throwing a regular yeast culture in the freezer will not end up with very happy yeast (i.e. they will all die).

I have been freezing yeast for about 9 months now and have successfully brewed with 5 different yeasts saved for over 6 months in a couple of cases.

I now have a stock of about 8-9 different yeasts.

I make 4 vials to freeze with each new purchase. If I made 4 new vials each time for 4 generations I could brew 256 batches from the original package!

I had good success with almost every yeast frozen in glycerin solution, except wlp300 (hefeweizen) which shows prolonged lag phase. I assume that viability was smaller than with other strains.
