Does mead run into the same oxygen permeation issues in fermenting vessels that beer does?

Absolutely- maybe worse, because the fermentation can go very slowly at the end, and it ages for well, ages. It's important to have a glass carboy, (maybe a BB, but I'm not sure) and almost no headspace, when it goes into secondary.
