I don't have a brewing store near me and I was wondering if anyone had any alternatives to the nylon straining bag everyone seems to want to use. Could I use a tea steeper for the hops?

Run to Lowes/HomeDepot/Ace Hardware and get some paint strainer bags. They have 5 gallon, and 1 gallon, and they work great.

When I'm using whole hops on a brew day I have a lingerie laundry bag that I use. It's a bit of a pain because of the zipper but it has larger holes so the hops get soaked faster and it also drains faster.
Plus... it's a lingerie bag.

G'day mate you can use a tea steeper but you will need a big one, this ones 120mm x 65mm easy to clean if you can't get one and you want one let me know
The problem with the standard metal "tea" strainers is they can compact the hops, so you need a big one, like this:

I use pairs of nude panty hose that I boil with three water changes. This does a pretty good job holding pellet hops.
How does that compare to using the muslin bags for just steeping grains? If I didn't save my previous bags from past brews, I'd been screwed on this last batch. Is the metal strainer a better option, or do I need to hit my local Lowe's or Home Depot?

Using the large steeping basket, is it a pain in the ass to add more hop additions?
