Anything reuseable from a washing machine?

Have a fairly new washing machine that crapped out shortly after warranty. Area repair guys cost as much as buying a new one, so we got a new one.

It is a front load style. Is there anything march pump like, or worth cobbing off it before I get rid of it?

with the right gearing ratio ya might be able to use the motor to motorize a grain mill.

I'm an appliance tech, FL machines mostly use a DC motor that use a computer to control direction and speed of the motor so that's useless unless you can redesign the controller. The water pump may be useful if you just want to pump cooling water for some reason, but a submersible pond or sump pump would probably work better. Some manufacturers are starting to use DC water pumps that will be a little tricky to power.

butcherboy thats good to know, how many model years back do you need to go to find the old non dc motors and controllers.

It's a GE. Bummer about the DC deal; I think a lot of appliances do that.

You can pull the hot water and cold water supply valves. Also take out the water level sensor. It's probably a diaphragm pressure sensor. Both can be used in combination for automating filling your HLT and heating the water while you are at work. That way when you get home, you can mash in right away.

You might be able to use the knobs and buttons if it's not digital. There is probably a micro switch on the door.

Look for a top loader, most of the domestic makes use an AC motor that could be used without much problem to power a grain mill. Stay a way from some of the exotic models, like the Whirlpool Calypso or Cabrio they have a DC motor. GE has been using a DC motor in their TL machines for 5-7 years. A basic el-cheapo top loader should have a useable motor.

Got to thinking today, dryers almost always have a 110V motor that would make a great motor for a mill.
