I had a very small mother that I added to a recipe for growing a SCOBY I found on the internet. Today (1 week later) I found a thicker, perfectly formed baby growing on top of the liquid. I took it out of the jar expecting to see the mother underneath, but couldn't find it. After removing the contents from the jar I saw a blob on the bottom that I assume was it. I'm very happy with how well the SCOBY grew in such a short amount of time, but I didn't think it would "devour" the mother. Has anyone else had this experience brewing kombucha?

Sometimes the older or smaller culture will shrivel up a bit. Maybe it just means you have a nice aggressive culture. But it should be ready to realize one day it too may be devoured by its baby ;-)
