BJCP says 30-45 is within the range for an American Pale Ale. Not that you need to strictly stay in those guidelines, but yes that's about correct for an American Pale Ale.
Dont forget that your water profile will effect how the bitterness is percieved by your tounge.
(its easy to just brew and see how 45 ibu tastes, then pay attention to how 25 tastes etc, this means no water testing and etc etc)
