I will be brewing on Monday my first batch.

Wyeast american ale yeast 1056 - Making a yeast starter now.

Autumn Amber Ale

OG 1.046
FG 1.012

Batch size is 5 gallons and I will be using a 6.50 gallon ale pale for primary.
I know this has been asked a million times so I'm sorry but I want to get this right. Is a blow off tube needed with this beer style/yeast and amount of head space? There is only a small hole in the lid with a rubber gromit for the air lock.. no hole for a large blow off tube.
Any feedback appreciated. Thanks

You don't always know until it too late.

If your airlock blows foam, fit your blow-off to it, and clean the lock. Swap it back when all is done. Not a big deal. sanitize every thing.

For 5 gal I think you have enough head space. A smaller blow off tube doesn't hurt, nor would adding a blow off tube if you are worried. I currently use 3/8 tubing if I am expecting any blow off.
