has anyone had this happen to them? I plan on conditioning a four gallon batch with half a cup of dextrose this weekend and don't want beer all over the walls!

This should be fine.
If you follow the guideline of 0.75 cup for a 5 gallon batch, the same level of carbonation can be met in a 4 gallon batch by using 0.6 cup.
Some algebra:
0.75 X 4 * 0.75
------ = ------ => ---------- = X => 0.6 = X
5 4 5
