I've read (and utilized) a number of the different techniques for priming pumps, from using a valve to flood the lines to disconnecting your intake and discharge lines to prime them first. Has anyone tried using an automatic air-release valve such as http://www.mcmaster.com/#4928K8 to do the same thing? Seems like it would continually vent any air that might get into your system, and would quickly prime your pump without the need for opening valves or pulling off hoses. One of these just before the pump would vent the trapped air and allow the line to fill with fluid, priming the pump and getting you on your way.

Has anyone else thought of this or tried to make it work?

should work; the price is probably prohibitive though. Cheapest version is about $30, the one you should buy (for potable water) is anywhere from $199-$500. yeah, no.
