I'm figuring out the alcohol of the stout I just made and always had a question.

SG was 1.032
FG (check to see if fermentation has stoped) was 1.010

Promash puts % by weight at 2.26
ProMash puts % by volume at 2.88

What is the difference between these two and which one do we use?

Alcohol is lighter than water, so an ounce (by weight) of alcohol is about 1.25 ozs. in volume. 3.2% by weight is 4.0% ABV. ABV sounds sooo much better when you are selling BMC, so legally that's how they are labelled.

I think just about everyone uses ABV.

ABV is the defacto standard, but you'll see ABW mentioned in legal texts and by some brewers from time to time.
