Ive been looking to upgrade my mashtun to a 10 gallon rubbermaid cooler like the ones Northern Brewer has: http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewi...ags/all-grain-system-mash-tun-10-gallons.html

Although its a 10 gallon cooler, does it fit the grain and 1.5 quarts/lb of water thats needed for a 10 gallon batch? Its obviously too small for 10 gal batches of huge barleywines and such but will it fit blonde ales, pale ales, ipa ect.

Any help from you 10 gal brewers would be appreciated.

Here is a handy calculator

I created a small spreadsheet so that I can work offline. Here is the formula for mash volume based on grain bill and mash thickness:

mash volume [gal] = weight of grain [lbs] * (0.08 + mash thickness [qts/lb] / 4)

I use a 50 quart cooler for 10 gallon batches and can easily handle 25 pounds of grain.
