Ale with ginger

I have made a couple of kit beers and would like to start customising. I have a standard ale kit and would like to flavour it with ginger.

Would I be best off with powdered cooking ginger or fresh ginger? How much should I use to flavour a 40 pint kit?

Would I need to change the amount or type of sugar I use?

Any advise would be great, cheers
 
Definitely use fresh ginger, a couple ozs boiled at various times. Im still trying to perfect my ginger pale ale, so id be interested in others advice as well!
