Just had my first Barleywine tonight at Bristol Brewery at it's release party. I was curious of the forum reader's flavor profiles of barleywines. I know quite a few people on here are brewing these.

To be honest I was expecting a beer unlike any I've had before. Instead I felt it was close to a run-of-the-mill Munich Style Lager but with a very dark color like an English Porter.

Do Barleywine's vary significantly?

Yes they do, but I wouldn't classify something that tastes like a Munich Lager as one. They tend to be heavy British ales. Some companies will call anything over 8-9% ABV a barleywine, if it doesn't fit somewhere else.

Plenty of caramel, dried fruit, nuts, toast, leather, and usually, hops.
