What do you guys do to avoid burning a hole in your grain sock?

Are we talking the bag you steep grain in or the 55# sack?

If it's steepted grain...then you can try an nylon bag. Get a nylon paint strainer from Lowes.
There used to strain five gallon buckets of paint. It shouldn't melt even in direct contact with the bottom of the pot.

If it's the sack then move it away from the fire.... :)

when I steep grains I always tie the bag off to the handle of the pot with some twine, just enough so that all the grain was submerged but the twine didn't hang into the liquid at all. avoids any scorching on the bottom of the pot and its easier to fish out, just pull the twine up.
