Hey guys, doin an American Amber partial mash today and had an idea I thought someone out there might have tried already and wanted to get some feedback on it. I'm gonna mash just under 6 1/2 pounds of grain, but I only have a five gallon pot so I can't do a full boil. In the past I would just use enough sparge water to get 4+ gal. into the kettle. Today I thought I'd sparge enough for 5.5 gal. of wort and only boil 4 gal. in the pot with the hops and take the other 1.5 gal. and boil that in other pot for 15-20 min. and then add it to the other wort after the boil right before i cool it. Has anyone tried this? Will this severely affect my hop utilization? I figured this would be a better idea than adding 1.5 to 2 gal of water into the fermenter. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
