Sparge with a step infusion?

I did my first step infusion tonight. The water necessary to reach my temps left me with a pretty diluted mash. Even without sparging, I ended up collecting 7 gallons of wort. For this reason, I didn't sparge because I simply didn't know what to do with the extra volume. Is this a common problem with step infusions?
 
You have to plan your water additions better; start with a thicker mash and add boiling water. Brewing software helps with these calculations.
