I was wondering if anyone can tell me how dark it should be while the brew is fermenting. I've read a bit on how UV can affect the outcome of the beer. But, I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid by putting blankets on the carboys which are stored in a pitch black storage room in the basement. I also get on my wife's case when she leaves the lights on in the room...

Am I being paranoid?

no direct (or bright indirect) sunlight. other than that, RDWHAHB. you don't need to treat it like a cave fish, or jeapardize your relationship with your wife over it :)

I just use a heavy tshirt on my carboys and use my basement normally. When I secondary, I usually throw them under the stars in a dark corner at the back of the basement, but that's only because I want them out of the way for the six months or more that they'll be sitting there.
