The Dark side..

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how dark it should be while the brew is fermenting. I've read a bit on how UV can affect the outcome of the beer. But, I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid by putting blankets on the carboys which are stored in a pitch black storage room in the basement. I also get on my wife's case when she leaves the lights on in the room...

Am I being paranoid?

no direct (or bright indirect) sunlight. other than that, RDWHAHB. you don't need to treat it like a cave fish, or jeapardize your relationship with your wife over it

No florescent lights either. They emit UV light, and THAT is what causes the problems.

Incandescent light won't harm the beer.

I just use a heavy tshirt on my carboys and use my basement normally. When I secondary, I usually throw them under the stars in a dark corner at the back of the basement, but that's only because I want them out of the way for the six months or more that they'll be sitting there.
