"Mojo" by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

I may be late to the party, but I'm glad I didn't miss it altogether. I'm a long time Petty fan but never got around to this album. Immediately, upon first listen, I was shocked at how great the tunes are. The style, the sound, just the whole vibe is simply fantastic. One great song after...

How will this Yeast Change My Stout?

I recently purchased a True Brew Irish Stout kit from my local homebrew store. It was the only stout kit they had on hand. Aftter talking about a few of my favorite stouts (Bear republic Black Stout, Steelhead Extra Stout, etc) and telling him that I really wasn't a fan of Guinness(anymore), he...

Advice Needed on Adding Molasses, Vanilla Beans, Cocoa Powder

I'm going to be brewing an Ipswich Oatmeal Stout clone (5 gal, extract) purchased from AHB. Here's a link to the product: http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=1745 The brew should taste great as is, but I'm debating making a few additions just for fun to see if I can...

Best Way to Enhance the Caramel Flavor?

If I'm brewing a 5 gal stout extract kit, what's the best way to boost the caramel flavor? Add more crystal malt? If so, how much and when? Do I need to remove something to "make room" for the extra crystal malt? Or just add some caramel syrup or extract? Again, if so, how much and when? Thanks!

    Dry "Hopping" with Breakfast Cereal?

I'm going to brew a stout soon and was wondering if floating some kind of chocolatey breakfast cereal would enhance the aroma and /or flavor. What are the potential pitfalls of doing this? If it's doable, how much should I use? Thanks!

Recipe Etiquette? How to Make a Brew "Your Own"

Just wondering what the brewing community's thoughts are on recipe etiquette, and what makes a brew "your own". What I mean is, I've done a few extract kit beers now, and I'm ready to start tweaking with the goal being a brew I can call my own. Problem is, I'm not sure where to start...

    Too much head?

This is my first time kegging. My pale ale tastes great, and the frothy head is appealing to the nose and eye, but there's just a little too much of it. When I pour a pint, about half the glass is head/foam. I've been letting it settle then topping off. But I'd like to be able to pour a pint...

    The Hellacopters

Anyone here ever listen to The Hellacopters? If not, they're likely the best (hard) rock band you've never heard. Stumbled upon them a couple years ago, and these guys are simply fantastic. Great songwriting, guitar tone, vocals, drumming, bass, etc. It's all there. They've quickly become one of...

    First Time Kegging Question

My pale ale has been in primary for 4 weeks at about 64 degrees, sitting in basement. I was planning on siphoning into the keg, then hooking up co2, and placing both keg & co2 into kegerator to carb and chill for however long necessary. I was under the impression that this would be ok, and...

One Set Up for All Styles?

I currently have a kegerator set up to dispense Guinness. Beer Gas, nitrogen regulator, stout faucet, etc. I used to love Guinness, but I've since moved on to other beers and I'm not really into Guinness all that much anymore. I still love stouts though, particularly Bear Republic Big Bear Black...

True Brew Irish Stout Nitrogen or Co2?

Purchased a True Brew Irish Stout kit, and now I'm wondering if the fact that it's called an "Irish" stout implies that it's intended to be used with nitrogen a la Guinness? I'm hoping the answer is no, because I'm looking for more of an American stout like Sierra Nevada, etc. I had the owner of...

Converting Partial Boil to Full Boil

I'm still pretty new at this stuff, so please excuse me if the answer to this question is obvious. I've done 2 True Brew kit beers so far and they both call for a partial 2 gallon boil which is later added to 3 gallons water, and that's what I've done. However, I have a large enough kettle to do...

    Identify This Hardware (Nut)

The nut has 6 splines on the outer edge, looks more like a gear. What the hell kind of nut is this? I'm currently using a flathead screwdriver against the splines to turn it in a prying/pushing fashion. It's on a lag bolt coming out of a wall into a bannister, and the (very small) access hole is...

Best Purchase to Upgrade My Rig

So I've just gotten into brewing and am currently using the standard True Brew kit with the 2 plastic buckets, auto siphon, bottling wand, etc. I'm doing partial boils in a regular 5 gal stainless kitchen pot on the stove top. So far, so good! My question is, what (in your opinion) would be the...

    Critique My Recipe/Process

So this is a combination of a True Brew Pale Ale kit, and a Stone IPA clone recipe. It's my second brew. The Steep: Crystal Malt grains for 25minutes. The Boil: 1.5 gallons water (will add to 3 gallons, then top off to total 5) 1 can Hopped Light Malt Extract, 2 lbs Light Dried Malt Extract...

    Did I ruin my Brew?

Filled my fermenting bucket with 3 gal cold water, added the just boiled (and still hot) wort, then topped off to make 5 gallons, just like the instructions said. It required about one gallon(60 min boil), and I topped off by running cold water down the inside wall of the bucket. Did I...

Unfiltered Sediment: Swirl, Add & Drink?

So I'll be bottling my first batch of Pale Ale soon, and I'm expecting there to be some sediment at the bottom of each bottle upon drinking. (I'm going to bottle condition for 3 weeks). I've read that some consider the sediment undesirable and therefore recommend pouring the beer into a glass...

Bottling vs Kegging (Already have Kegerator)

I'm a first time brewer, but this seemed like a more appropriate place for this question vs the beginner forum. My first batch will be ready to bottle in about 2 weeks. I've yet to clean/sanitize any bottles. Before I do so, I'm wondering if I'd be better off kegging instead? The reason I'm...

    Brewing First Batch. Couple questions!

Being new here, I'd first like to thank everyone for the wealth of helpful information, experience, and insight found on this forum. As a beginner brewer it's a fantastic resource, and one I hope to contribute to in the future. So, I'm brewing a True Brew Pale Ale kit. I was hoping to brew an...
