    Thoughts on a Smoked Porter

Here is my robust porter recipe, based on a clone for Founders Robust Porter (can't remember who had the base recipe, i just took out base malt and swapped in the cherry smoked malt): Type: All Grain Batch Size: 5.25 gal Brewer: Justin Schultz Equipment: Keggle BIAB Efficiency: 80.00 % Est Mash...

    Okay to bottle 1.036 RIS?

sounds good, I bottled it today after priming with 2.7 oz of sugar. I can't wait for 2-4 months from now. It already tasted amazing so I don't think it will have to age as long as some I've seen on here.

Whats the Easter Bunny brewing today?

I bottled my RIS into some Grimbergen bottles (love the print on the bottle, looks all biblical) and brewed Beirmuncher's Boulevard Wheat clone. I mixed up the Simcoe and Cascade t the 5 min addition, don't think it will change it much.

    Okay to bottle 1.036 RIS?

I made this RIS on 3/2/13 and transferred into my secondary. I took a sample and it was at 1.036. Will this go any further down or will it be okay to bottle? Planned on aging in the bottle and bottling soon, just put it into secondary to free up a primary. I Mashed at 151 F and had a SG of...

    BIAB: Low efficiency?

I use my LHBS's standard crush and just got 72% out of a really big (1.101 SG) RIS. The same recipe people were getting 50-60% on and blaming BIAB, but thats not the case. I've also had great luck with NB's double crush. I just dough in, stir at the 20 min mark and then let it ride until 75-90...

Best way to age given my situation?

Thanks junga, I think I'll let it sit in primary for 3-4 weeks then bottle. Saved up 2 cases of Grimbergen Beer bottles, the 11.2 oz shouldn't be a big deal since I boiled .5gal too much off, just went with it for the extra ABV. Can't wait to try this one out when I get home!

Best way to age given my situation?

sorry, that came out wrong, I meant just extra yeast, read in other posts that with bigger beers sometimes having extra yeast added before bottling was useful. It will sit in a ground floor in a closet where the temps will stay steady. Living in Phoenix AZ now so the heat sucks but we have 2 AC...

Best way to age given my situation?

I have a RIS I just brewed via BIAB method: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f68/russian-imperial-stout-2011-hbt-competition-category-winner-238807/ Hit my mash temp of 152 F and mashed for 90 min, dropped to 149 before I started boil. Came out to 72% eff with a OG of 1.074 and a SG of 1.098...

    Parts for Son Of Fermentation

I got the r-5 foil backed 1" sheet, worked well but will be buying another to build a second layer on. as far as the fan, i used a 4" personal fan from walmart. it was only 6 bucks and I have is plugged directly to my temp controller. Works great has kept my beer at 66 F for 2 weeks, have to...

First AG, BIAB w/ NB double crush

I call in my order. I get 10% off for military discount. The guy on the phone said he couldn't guarantee the packer would double crush but he put a note asking them to. When I do the mild ill take a pic of the crush

First AG, BIAB w/ NB double crush

I have an english mild in the freezer waiting its turn, gotta kill the american wheat in the keg then it will be time for the mild. Can't wait! In the meantime got my buddy to go get some ingredients for a dead guy clone and we'll be brewing that soon on my equipment and then bottling that one.

First AG, BIAB w/ NB double crush

Just did my first BIAB AG brew and everything looks great! Its a NB Dry Dock Urca Vanilla Porter kit. Hit mash temps exactly, lost 1.5 degrees in 70 minutes, overshot my mashout temp by 7 degrees but still wound up with 78.8% efficiency so not bad! NB double crushed the grain for me and...

    Patersbier?

thats exactly what you'll get! I made a batch and was my first kegged beer 3 weeks ago. Took it to my promotion party and had it drained in an afternoon with the help of 8 other folks. Easy, simple and delicious. It had that double or trippel taste minus the heaviness and alchohol content. That...

    12 hour days...

Doing 0430-1830 every day at a school for the military (started March will finish December), worst I had was being awake for 72 hours and then hitting the ground in Iraq with 2 hours sleep. Salary job too!

    Midwest Supply v. Northern Brewer

I use NB for my stuff. The buddy I have that got me into homebrew used them and I like their kits. Also if you are military and call them to order they give you a 10% discount anytime. Can't beat 10% off! Any business willing to give service members a break gets my business

    Are you fit or fat?

6'2" and 225-230lbs and in good shape. was 250 when I got back from Iraq (lifted weights like mad!) but my new occupational school in the military requires 8-10 hours sweating in the sun of Florida every day and then I cap that off with an hour of organized physical training every weekday...

    unusual bottles.

For something different, found a beer called Mississippi mud. The beer isn't horrible (not great either) but it comes in a 32 oz jug with a metal screw on cap and a label that is shrink wrapped plastic, so its easy to get off. Oh and each bottle is only $2.99 + tax here in Niceville, FL. Even if...

Good Article about growing hops and tools of the trade

I have two of the hoes, they are good for more than hops. I gave one of them away to a produce farmer I worked for in Missouri growing up and its been 7 years of hard use and its still going. I love going out there, beautiful country and if you have some spare time the abbey there has a very...
