Ordered kit with Wyeast. Didn't open box for 5 days now it says refrigerate?

Is this yeast going to be any good? Do I have to refrigerate it before use? I realize brewers who know waht they are doing know what this stuff is but Midwest supplies packs the recipe kits into another box...and nothing was mentioned in the ordering process.

How much (if at all) is the beer going to change in flavor in the bottle?

Maybe this is dumb question but I just racked my first batch of beer over the weekend. As had been mentioned in a couple of places, I decided to take a quick sip of it to see how it tasted. It really smelled awesome but the taste was off to me. It tasted quite bitter another taste-tester in the...

    Fermentation...did I blow it?

Brewed first ever batch last Tuesday. Everything went according to plan, nothing too surprising. After about 24 hours, it started to bubble through airlock, I figured this was a good thing. After a few days though the bubbles essentially stopped, now they are completely stopped. My two...

Getting ready for the first brew...double check my process

Ok, it's almost time for me to do my first brew. Waiting on a couple last things to be delivered and then it's off to the races. Here is the process I intend to do. I am looking for 100% precision here as I will go down this list and check off each item as it is done. If you see anything amiss...

From kettle to bucket, bucket to carboy, carboy to bucket

For the following three tasks: 1) After boil, going from kettle to bucket 2) After 1st fermentation from bucket to carboy 3) After that, from carboy to bottling bucket What would say is easiest, least messy way to transfer between them? Would you recommend a funnel or a siphon or...

What was your initial investment into your home brew setup? How has it changed?

I'm certain the answers will range widely but I'm just wondering what people have put into their homebrew setup to start and where it stands now. So far I've got a kit ($100) and some bottles/carboy holder/caps ($50), a bayou propane burner ($50), kettle ($55). That's a total of about $250...

Shelf life of kit with dry yeast and crushed grains?

If I order a kit online with dry yeast and have them crush the grains, how long will it be good for? Days, weeks, months, years? Thanks!

Which recipe kit would you recommend for a 1st brew...

Nearing the first brew, last thing to order is pretty much a recipe kit. I have been told that an Ale is the way to go at the start. What kit would recommend (links would be great). I am placing an order with Brewmasters Warehouse so I would prefer to order from there but would consider Midwest...

Can someone explain to me wort chiller surface area?

I've been reading everything I can find on wort chillers and am still trying to decide between 1/2" and 3/8". I understand that the 1/2" will use more water. What's confusing me is that I've come across multiple things that say that somehow 3/8" might be more efficient and that is attributed...

SP10 and SQ14 now both 10 psi regulator

It appears based on a number of recent reviews on amazon that the SP10 now comes with a 10psi regulator as does the SQ14. I called bayou directly to confirm and the person I spoke to said that is in fact the case. The SP10 is upgradable to a 20psi I guess where the SQ14 is not (info got over the...

Wort Chiller: 3/8" or 1/2" diameter copper?

Looking into making an immersion chiller to save a couple of bucks. This will be for making roughly 5 gallon batches in a 36 qt stainless kettle. What do you prefer? 3/8" x 50' or 1/2" x 50' or ?

My equipment list! What am I missing?

Ok, finally ordered a bunch of stuff to get going. Here's what I've got: 1) Starter Kit(Brewing Starter Kit) 2) Bayou 55 quart stainless kettle (Amazon.com: Bayou Classic 1036, 36-Qt. Stainless Fryer/Steamer with Vented Lid: Patio, Lawn & Garden) 3) 48 amber bottles (2 x 12 oz Beer Bottles-...

    A Kettle Thread (sorry)

I have been lurking for a while and reading, reading, reading. I think it's down to these choices: Bayou 36 qt Winware 36 qt Morebeer stockpot (with fittings) Adventures in Home brewing kettle (with fittings). My target is around 35 quart size. My questions: 1) Do I need fittings at...
