    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

This was the first time using the brew belt, the others were in my living room where temps are 63-65

    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

i think they didn't turn out well because I didn't use a starter as Yooper pointed out, "there is barely enough yeast in a package to ferment 5 gallons". I'm still drinking it and think every batch is greatly improved. I've only used the brewbelt once Yea it said to pitch at that not to ferment.

    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

I go to beer wine hobby, used to goto barleycorns in natick but couldn't stand the "service" if you even want to call it that. Thanks yooper, I did think it was funny that every type of yeast vial says the same thing. OK just read up a little on starters, will .5L starter work for a 5gal...

    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

Ah sweet, conflicting information... it is a white labs lager yeast, I don't know the exact strain but I should have killed the brew belt after fermentation started? the recipe; 6 oz carapils malt 6 oz wheat malt 4 oz torrified wheat 4.5 lbs super light malt extract 3 lbs honey 2 oz cascade...

    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

I see, but the yeast itself says that the wort temp should be 75 while fermenting, the past batches haven't come out well... then again I don't think I aerated the others as well as this one. edit: theres no way this belt is putting the temp up to 80s, just not hot enough but i'll take a temp...

    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

the belt doesn't have a dial or anything but says it'll keep the brew around 75-80 for up to 8 days. after 7 i plan on checking gravity again and then will rack to keg and start lagering and i'll work my way down to 36 degrees.

    Brew belt and 'quality' yeast

So I picked up a belt for $26 at LHBS from owner's recommendation. From what I was reading in joy of homebrewing and on net the 'quality' lager yeasts ferment well at lower temps but what I was seeing in the airlock wasn't what I should have been. The yeasts they have say to keep brew around...

    Boiling... am I this challenged?

Could that be the problem with my friends fryer? I'll see how it does tonight and rewire the brinkmann. I actually bought 2 of them (on sale) so maybe i'll keep one for actually frying a turkey.

    Boiling... am I this challenged?

I just checked the air valve and it looked like it was 85% open, a little turn opened it 100%. the other thing is the temp gauge goes to like 400+, how could I fry a turkey if I can't even hit 200? hopefully this solves it!

    Boiling... am I this challenged?

So with my friends fryer I replaced the batteries in the regulator and it seemed like a 15 min timer to auto shut off, when the gas flow light blinked I pressed the start button again. I'll have to try it against the fryer I got from HD. The other thing (sad) is that this wasn't even a full...

    Boiling... am I this challenged?

I read here that some people use two burners but it looked too dispersed, maybe I'll try that next.. It's a masterbuilt turkey fryer kit that a friend brought over, I picked up one of the brinkmann turkey fryers from HD but haven't opened it yet. brewnoob1; I think that's what was happening...

    Boiling... am I this challenged?

As if things couldn't get any more complicated... I can't even seem to get wort to boil now. I picked up a turkey fryer and a fresh propane tank and ready to get going.. Well I was outside for about (maybe around 30s yesterday) an hour after I steeped my grains and for some reason it would not...

    Modify distilled or RO?

On my third batch I used distilled to see if there was a noticeable taste difference. Then i thought why not invest in a RO system? pH of water is best around 5.5? Does anyone modify RO water or distilled? I just moved and I will still drink my tap water but it could taste better. my...

    Cover your wort or upgrade?

That makes sense, it shouldn't expose my brew to too much i don't think? Removing the pail lid to test gravity is much higher risk of infection.

    Cover your wort or upgrade?

OK thanks, in my case I'm using a primary fermenting pail and my corny keg, no secondary. So would you let it sit in the primary for a longer time to fully complete fermenting then transfer and lower temps or transfer into corny and let sit then lower temps.

clean and star san or just star san?

right I meant a cleaning agent like my homebrew kit came with a few packets of C bright or something like that. I thought star san had to air dry, like overnight or some extended period.

clean and star san or just star san?

Is cleaning required before using star san? I don't see why if there's no visible sediment or residue in the pail after a wash. Also, star san'ing a pail can just be spraying the entire bucket rather than immersion? the bottle says to keep the surface wet for at least a min or something like...

    Cover your wort or upgrade?

Can't see pics. It isn't an online only deal at HD, I went last night and my local hd had 16 stock, picked up 2. Wrapping one for christmas present to myself and I'll be frying a turkey tonight and brewing sat hopefully. I assume the burner would be able to hold a 42 qt no problem? The...

Yup I'm going to HD after work to snatch one a two even if they're 30 qts. comes with burner too, can't beat that price.
