    Saving CO2 by keg priming?

I'll be doing a double batch this weekend, a pumpkin ale and an Irish red. Two weeks or so in primary, transfer to kegs, prime and put a 30lb CO2 blanket to seal them up. Another week or two and off to the kegerator. Sounds like a plan.

    My first bottle bomb

That is interesting, I always thought the swing tops looked beefier than standard longnecks.

    Saving CO2 by keg priming?

Good points in both posts. Thanks for the responses. I'm going to prime my first few kegs and see how it goes. Further experimentation to follow.

    Saving CO2 by keg priming?

I'm just getting into kegging and I am planning out my process. I'm leaning towards priming the keg and letting it sit for a few more weeks at room temperature and then putting in the kegerator on gas at serving pressure. My thought process is that priming would conserve CO2 and reduce trips to...

Austin Tx. Homebrewer help to start kegging

Austin has a pretty good homebrew network. I would start with some of the local clubs. You never know who's getting rid of something. I've also seen some steals on Craigslist on different components and full systems around that area. I found a local homebrewer here in Houston that was getting...

    My first bottle bomb

Good call on the cooler storage device. I started putting my bottles in a plastic storage bin after reading about bottle bombs. They say its not a matter of "if", but a matter of "when". Luckily, none here yet. I almost scared myself into PET bottles but eventually got over it. I added a...

    Danger of Hops to Dogs

I'll add my story, well really, my dog's story to this thread. When I first started brewing I wasn't aware of the potential dangers of toxicity of hops to dogs. Until then, I had my hops and other dry ingredients in a box on a shelf in my office. The day after brewing a porter, my dog, an...

Hefe kit for a Sunday brew session

I am brewing my first weissbier on Sunday which will be my 5th batch. Got my starter going a day earlier than my last few starters so I can get a good cold crash and harvest plenty of healthy slurry. I'll fill my carboy tomorrow with tap water and treat with campden for the chloromine in my...

1st BIAB - If I can, you can

Very similar method to what I use, different equipment. I now have an electric turkey fryer (30 quarts) I bought for $40 open box at my grocery store. It will hold at 150f, but isn't adjustable between there and boiling. Its simple and it works. I found that partial mash or extract and...

    First homebrew

I place my carboy in a cooler filled with water and use water bottles from my freezer to regulate fermentation temperature. At peak fermentation, it usually takes two bottles swapped twice/day for 65 degrees in my 76 degree house. By day three, I swap once per day. I can usually keep a 3-4...

How long should you age your Brew ?

I would say stay on the longer side when you are first starting out with ales. It doesn't hurt to wait, and in the case of new brewers, letting the yeast do their thing longer helps make up for less-than-perfect technique. I bottled after two weeks in primary and started drinking the beer...

First AG using BIAB was a success!

For AG, if you do one thing, it should be to walk through your brew day and write a detailed procedure ahead of time. The directions that come with kits are most likely junk, out of date, or over-simplified, IMO. If you use a technique on the forum, write it down, walk through it, and modify...

First AG using BIAB was a success!

Quick update on the porter... I found a bottle of porter in my beer closet and cracked it open after 5 months. It was absolutely delicious! The texture was great, head retention good, no off flavors. The only thing I could find to critique was a very slight aroma that I still haven't been...

First AG using BIAB was a success!

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep the remaining bottles in storage for another 2 to 4 weeks.

First AG using BIAB was a success!

I bottle-conditioned the beer, in case anyone was wondering. I conditioned for two weeks before sampling.

First AG using BIAB was a success!

The porter turned out great for my second batch. It tastes pretty good, though I note a slight skunky smell. The beer doesn't have much head retention, but is carbonated well for a porter. I suspect the second paint strainer bag my have pulled too much protein out of the wort. Next time I...
