    Plum Wine Not Fermenting

Thanks all. 1.150 wasn't a typo, but it may not be accurate. I took a quick and dirty sample and thought I eyeballed it around there, but I was only looking to see if it had fermented or not, so it could be lower. I have a new packet of yeast rehydrating now, so I just went to look at the must...

    Plum Wine Not Fermenting

Hi all, I started a batch of plum wine according to this recipe last Friday: https://eckraus.com/content/plumwine.pdf I didn't pay any attention to it all week, and I just transferred it to a secondary carboy. Didn't see a whole lot of yeast activity when I popped it open, but there was some...

    so frustrated with keg leaks!

there is definitely the plastic sealing piece built into the end of the threaded post. its on there pretty snugly, i'll check again in the morning and see if it has held pressure overnight.

    so frustrated with keg leaks!

Ok, got it fixed...99% anyways. I replaced my gas orings with size 112 from mcmaster carr (i was previously using 111, as the keg oring thread suggests). now i get no gas leaks when i wiggle the disconnects. maybe someone should update the oring thread to let pin lock owners know they might...

    so frustrated with keg leaks!

more thoughts as i am thinking about it... i have all pin lock kegs. is it possible that my old kegs have old valves, that have oring grooves that have worn down? i wonder if replacing the gas valves and putting on new orings might help. do people have better luck typically with ball valves, or...

    so frustrated with keg leaks!

I have been kegging my beer for close to a year, and have had to refill a 10lb co2 tank like 4 times, because it keeps leaking out! i have pin lock kegs, and i have replaced all of the orings with the silicon ones in the size recommended on this site. I use a thin layer of keg lube on the...

i keep losing all my co2!

they are pin lock, and occasionally they do leak when i wiggle the disconnect, but not every time...i ordered the orings from mcmaster carr based on the ones mentioned in this post https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/mcmaster-keg-o-ring-list-233086/ should i try a different size?

i keep losing all my co2!

this is the third time this has happened - i go away for the weekend and come back to find that my co2 tank in my keezer is empty. i've sprayed around looking for leaks, replaced orings....not really sure what else to do! i have my co2 manifold attached to the lid of the keezer, and my hunch...

California Common California Common (Anchor Steam Clone) Extract and AG

brewed this about two weeks ago, just took a reading and it tastes excellent! only change i made was to the hop schedule: i added at 60, 15, and 5, only because i toured the brewery earlier this year and i think this is what they said they did. fermented at 55 for about 10 days, then brought...

two thoughts about when to bottle/keg?

fair enough. revvy, reading that thread (among others) is what prompted me to ask the question more specifically, to get an idea of which is more popular around here. but i get the "no right answer" sort of answer, its more of an art than a science. i can live with that!

took yer advice and got apple juice beer!

the recipe unfortunately is lost. it was written by the head brewer at my lhbs, and his recipes have never failed me before. this was also my last partial mash batch before i started going all grain, and i didn't take notes. so, i guess i couldve screwed up along the way and not known it... i...

two thoughts about when to bottle/keg?

hey everyone, i have been doing a lot of reading on this forum in order to improve some of my brewing techniques, and i feel like i am seeing two different opinions about when to bottle/keg beer: opinion #1: leave beer in primary 3-4 weeks for an average size beer, then keg or bottle. this...

took yer advice and got apple juice beer!

sorry, the wort was in the high 60s during active fermentation (according to the fermometer on the bucket). still could be it though.

took yer advice and got apple juice beer!

can't remember the exact temperature, but it was probably in the high 60s, with safale-05. and it's not really like vinegary, like, i would still probably drink it if i accidentally ordered it in a bar. hopefully it's on the upswing and will be delicious at some point.

took yer advice and got apple juice beer!

@broadbill: i guess i don't really think the long primary caused the flavor....logically. but it sucks potentially losing a batch of beer that you put a lot of effort into, and i want something to blame. the long primary was the only thing i changed about my process, so although it doesn't make...

took yer advice and got apple juice beer!

i brewed a partial mash amber ale a few months ago and decided i would try keeping it in the primary for the length of fermentation, since people on this forum speak to that method all the time. prior to this, all my beers went for ~1 week in the primary, ~2 in secondary with no problems. After...

    is this diacetyl?

yeah 55 actually, although i pitched the yeast in the 60s and brought the temp down over a few hours (at the suggestion of my lhbs). and since it is a cali common, i was not planning on lagering. after a bit more research, i am thinking that i will take it out of my fermentation fridge in a few...

    is this diacetyl?

i've been fermenting a california common for the last 8 days at 55 degrees. used the san francisco lager from white labs, made a starter, temperature has been consistent. OG was 1.053, and a hydrometer sample today measures 1.012. I'll take another in a few days, but i am guessing it is pretty...

efficiency loss after the mash? or just confused about beersmith.

hey all, i just finished up my second all grain batch, and i'm still trying to learn a bit about mash efficiency, brewhouse efficiency, and how beersmith calculates it all. i have my total efficiency set to 75%. with this, i am right on the money with my preboil volume and gravity - my...

    is my starter done?

hey all, i made my first yeast starter last night with the plan of refrigerating it tonight, decanting and pitching it into a brew that i will be making tomorrow afternoon. thing is, i think the starter is still working. it was slow to get going, i think because my house is cold, but i...
