Just sampled beer after 2 weeks of fermentation....

Thanks for the response. I realize that the taste of the beer will still drastically change after it's bottled. I guess I just thought during that period existing undesirable flavors would mellow or go away, not that the desirable flavors would actually grow stronger.

Just sampled beer after 2 weeks of fermentation....

I used the Autumn Amber Ale kit from Midwest. Good to hear that everything is normal with the brew. So far I've hit all my numbers and everything is going smoothly. Knock on wood!

Just sampled beer after 2 weeks of fermentation....

This is my first attempt at brewing. As I took my final gravity reading (1.011), I tasted the beer. While it certainly tasted and smelled like beer, it was also a bit...bland tasting, as if it had been watered down. Is this normal at this stage in the brewing process? I skimmed my sample...

When will I know if I messed up my first brew?

Haha, very true. I guess your response and the others put into perspective that I'm worrying about something comparatively small. I shook up the wort quite a bit after I added the additional pre-boiled gallon. I didn't use a yeast starter, but I did rehydrate my yeast in 85-90 degree water (I...

When will I know if I messed up my first brew?

So last night I attempted my first brew. Aside from the fact that the whole process took a bit longer than I thought it would and I was working into the wee hours of the night, I screwed up during one of the VERY finals steps of the process and am worried that I have ruined my beer...

About to brew first batch, any words of wisdom?

I purchased a brew kit on Groupon and had to wait a few days before I could actually place the order. It's presently in the mail on its way over to me, and I have had a lot of time in the last week to learn about home brewing. I think I have a good grasp of the brewing process (at least...

Best way for beginner to cool wort?

What is the best way for a beginner to cool wort? I was thinking about just dunking it in an ice bath. Is there a better way without using specialized equipment?

I have no idea what anyone's talking about, best place to start reading?

Just bought my starter brew equipment but have yet to receive it. Can anyone direct me to a good source of consolidated information that explains the basics of the brewing process and terminology? I don't want to buy a book or anything just yet. Thanks!

Total Noob, Basic Equipment to Get Started?

Awesome. I was going to go to HomeBrew Mart down here in SD (I'm in Mission Valley, BTW), but I managed to get the Groupon link to work and, after comparing it to all the other deals out there, including the ones offered at HBM, I realized that the Groupon price was unbeatable and I placed an...

Total Noob, Basic Equipment to Get Started?

I tried clicking on that link but it keeps failing. I went to Denver Groupon and couldn't find the kit. Nooooo. :cross:

Total Noob, Basic Equipment to Get Started?

Thanks for all the quick replies. It sounds like it might be easier for me to just buy a kit rather than piece something together buying a carboy on CL, etc. I will check out the recommendations in this thread. Does anyone know of any cheap places where I can get a large pot? I don't even...

Total Noob, Basic Equipment to Get Started?

Hi everyone. I just stumbled into this new hobby and I'm looking to get started with my first brew. I don't want to buy total crap for my equipment but I would like to keep the budget under $100, including ingredients for the first batch. I know that I'll need a carboy or something similar...
