    What is craft beer?

Starting this thread based on a question in another thread; didn't want to send that one too far off-topic. Here's what the Brewers Association says: Here's another guy's take (and I don't know him from Adam, but he makes some interesting points) on why that definition is flawed

Anyone else oder rhizomes from Northern Brewer?

I tossed this out in another thread, but did anyone else order rhizomes from Northern Brewer? I did, and they arrived on Friday Mar 28 by USPS. And the return address on the package? Freshops 36180 Kings Valley Hwy Philomath OR 97370 Wondering if others saw the same thing, or whether...

    Beer Swap 2007 - Bike N Brew's beers

Want 95% efficiency? Do it this way!

    1) Start with a small batch. I was aiming for 2.5 gal of Cheese's CCA @1.056 OG 2) Grind the living daylights out of your grain...I mean seriously, like you WANT a stuck sparge, with that 30% wheat ground into flour. 3) Attempt a decoction, for no good reason other than you want to try it...

    NOW we're crushing...90% efficiency!

So I finally figured out the adjustment on my CrankandStein mill...no, not "I figured out where to set it" (well, that too), but "I figured out HOW to set it". Yes, despite the elegant simplicity of the mill and some reasonably (though not crystal) clear written instructions, I wasn't...

5 weeks (on yeast) in secondary...rack?

My barleywine went from 1.108 to 1.030 after 3 weeks in primary, then stalled. Racked to secondary with new yeast. Been there 5 weeks, down to 1.016 and still active. Has some honey in it, and I can still taste unfermented honey (more than I'd like) so I'd like to let it go a little lower...

    New 2nd assistant brewmaster

Seems a little lazy and whiny, but hey it's only been 23 hours. I think he'll work out. https://cdn.homebrewtalk.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=3654&c=1

    O2 stone - did I lose a piece?

So I went to aerate my brew today, and something seemed funny about the bubbling coming from the O2 stone. I pulled it back out of the brew, and the stone was gone...just the hose and the female half of a compression fitting remaining (explains the funny bubbling) I found the stone (after...

    Easily adjusting beer line length?

Anyone have a good way to quickly adjust beer line length in their kegerator? I'm thinking of some kind of quick disconnect setup where I could easily splice in or take out a couple feet of beer line when switching between low- and high-carbonated beers...the ordinary bitter kicks, you splice...

    Frozen kegs!

Went to tap a pint of my new IPA...it's in the upright freezer that I use for lagering, and for dispensing kegs when I have more than the two that fit in my kegerator. Disaster! When I opened the door, there is beer slush everywhere...not homebrew, than goodness, but some BMC light beer that...

    And I will call it...Mini-Mild

So I'm all lined up with ingredients and recipes, but I can't brew anything. I finally decided to get a grain mill, so all my grains are uncrushed. Problem is, Crankandstein is taking a long time to ship my order (first they were out of adjusting knobs, now they're out of packing peanuts, if you...

    You want grapefruit? (I didn't)...

    but I brewed this, and I got grapefruit juice: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7# 2-row pale 2# flaked rye Mashed @ 152 for 60 min, mashout at 168, 2-batch sparge w/180F H2O to collect 6.5 gal Boiled with 0.25 oz Centennial 9.5% -...

    Aerate secondary?

Short version: would you aerate in secondary, if you were still expecting some "real" fermentaton (8-10 points of gravity) to take place? Long version: I brewed this barleywine a few weeks back...pitched on a yeast cake from a previous batch, and SG went from 1.108 to 1.030 in 48 hours...

Can't get hose and barb to seal

Had a slow leak drain my CO2 tank; thought it was one of my kegs but have identified the problem as the connection of the gas line to the barb on the gas-in disconnect...have already done the following: - swapped out the disconnect - cut an inch from the end of the line - swapped out the...

My 10-gal Rubbermaid MLT -- sucks?

EDIT: Never mind, first mash went fine. RDWHAHB... I had been mashing in a 9-gal stainless pot, which also doubled as my brewpot. But I got tired of trying to hold the temp in it. It lost heat pretty fast, and while it's possible to add heat, that requires a lot of monitoring, work, and is...

    Your oldest brew?

I'm sure this thread has been done, but my feeble searching didn't turn it up...what's the oldest of your beers that you've (a) consumed or (b) still have on hand? I have one remaining bottle of Invisible Blizzard Imperial Stout, which was brewed in the winter of 1996-97. Records incomplete...
