Pros and cons of "fast ferment" ?

http://www.fastbrewing.com/products/fastferment Considering buying this system, but I dont like the fact that once wall-mounted, you're stuck brewing in the same room all the time. Also wort-chilling will require additional equipment as well.. Should i buy this system ? I like dry-hopping ...

Thanks Revvy, the link you provided gives me "page not found". Pitching dry yeast at 12C wont damage it ?

Yeast doesnt seem to want to cooperate :(

thanks guys, will check tonight after work. It's not a homemade recipe, its a beer kit...an irish red ale, very simple, not very hoppy. I did take an initial reading with my hydrometer at least. The wort is composed of liquid malt and hop pellets - the recipe said to add 4L of water to the...

Yeast doesnt seem to want to cooperate :(

Hi guys, Last sunday I boiled some wort/hops and cooled it off very fast , by pouring it directly on 2 X 4L ice cubes of distilled water. I added enough distilled water to bring the total volume up to 23 L. ( 5 gallons ) The wort temp dropped down to 12 C degrees . ( 54 F ) right away. I...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

there is a big difference in adding natural "chemicals" , like calcium, salt, algea, whatever, and other chemicals, like artificial flavour, artificial colors ( I did see artificial colors on that list ! ) , things like sodium azide - an anti-fungal and a bunch of other stuff i had no idea what...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

I tried that IPA at our local beer festival ! pretty good for bottled beer ;) The big beer companies can add all kinds chemicals to their beer to stabilize it. I know a guy who works for Molson , here in montreal. He showed me a list of additives, I figgered around 20 or so . no wonder...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

I agree with you ayoungrad. "luck" is the part of the process that includes variability. Every batch of grain is not exactly the same. Fresh hops vary in terms of harvest year , growing conditions, etc etc. I'm betting you can make the same recipe over and over and try your best to keep...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

when i say "luck" it means making the same recipe, the same way...and having the beer taste a bit different each time. For that reason most microbrews combine several batches, to ensure consistent taste. As far as microbrew bottled beer goes...I agree some of it isnt as good as homebrew...but I...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

well, my friend wants better quality, but also larger volumes than the usual 23 L. buckets. This part, I understand. Why copper ? The guy is a doctor and makes a lot of cash. I suspect he wants something to show off in his basement. Logically, if you take the same recipe, same brewer, and...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

I assume you use this to put your primary fermenter in ? what sort of temps are optimal for ales ? ( I realize lagers need much cooler temps )

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

reason I'm asking, is one of my home brew friends wants to buy one of those massive copper kettles and other professional brewing equipment. He seems convinced better equipment will produce better quality beer.... less chance of any oxidation , more tighter control over temperature ( stovetop...

Can homebrew ever equal microbrew quality ?

I love microbrew beer, and the challenge to to equal or best it, in terms of taste, quality. Using only simple plastic fermenters, basic equipment...is it possible to succeed ?? 99 % of all homebrew I've tried never quite beats microbrew, imo.

An IPA success story ! :)

Mmmm..I'll put the bottles in my basement. It should be interesting to see how the beer changes after 2 more weeks.
