Belgian Dubbel Ommegang Abbey Dubbel

Great recipe. Just tasted mine this weekend while I was racking to the secondary. Very pleasant flavors, and looking forward to drinking the rest in November and December. FYI - I added 2oz candied ginger and 1/4 C honey @ 10 min in addition to the orange peel. (Skipped the coriander...

    immersion chiller - alternate design

oh sorry i meant to compliment keelanfish. although this forum raises an OK q about the benefits of double-coil v. counterflow...

i would love to remold my 90' of tubing into a design like this. i have no clue how you were able to shape it so perfectly. great job!

    Help With Immersion Chiller?

i don't have an air compressor, but i can get most of the liquid out of mine just using the lame pump that i use for camping. (it inflates rafts, air mattresses, bike tires, etc.) if you have any kind of air pump lying around, i would give it a try. if not, just make sure you store it...

Wort Chillers - Can you Reshape Them to Fit New Kettle?

I made my own wort chiller a few years ago. It is a double-coil (one smaller cylinder within a larger one, with a few inches in between), made of 90 feet of 3/8" copper tubing. [Shown on its side in the picture below] Homemade by clitesbr, on Flickr[/IMG] I designed it to fit my old 5...

    First IPA Questions

old forum, but great question. when I "dry" hop, I like to sterilize the hops in hard alcohol, then add the whole shebang to the secondary and rack on top of it. if you have a lot of booze around, you can have some fun pairing flavors. (If not, its not a huge deal, as we're only talking...

Weldless Ball Valve parts... at Lowe's/HD????

I found out the hard way that STAINLESS FITTINGS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT LOCAL STORES. In the Chicago area, the following five stores carry brass, galvanized, & "black steel" NPT fittings, but NOT stainless steel: - Home Depot - Lowes - Menards - Ace - Crafty Beaver

    Weldless ball valve problems

I had the exact same problem, but unfortunately I didn't find this forum until a nightmarish set of exchanges with the supplier, and many trips to local hardware stores. Apparently, they get these valve assemblies prepacked, and they haven't been doing any quality inspection before they ship...

    carbonation problems WHILE bottling

That's what we did this past time. But the connection between the siphon and the filler has to be lower than the level of the liquid one's transferring. And the filler rod is a little longer than a foot. So when you use that method, how do you manage to keep the bottles less than a few feet...

    carbonation problems WHILE bottling

really? ugh! i got the recipe off of a neighbor who makes good stuff, but i'm learning he's pretty liberal with his beer classifications.

    carbonation problems WHILE bottling

yeah i'm concerned the honey may have been part of the problem i've bottled with honey a few times, but i've yet to find a good balance. Vol. II of Charlie Papazzan's intro books has a chart that suggests 1 C. honey to prime a 5 gal. batch. That really over carbonated my first batch, so I've...

    carbonation problems WHILE bottling

Thanks for the sanitizing tips. i know many brewers prefer kegging, and thats where the industry has innovated, but i really wish there was better equipment out there for bottling at home.

    carbonation problems WHILE bottling

yeah - our bottling spigot is kind of junky, and very temperamental. does anyone have suggestions for other ways to bottle (without using keg or reverse carb)? i wanted to use bcocc4cp's 15 gal. stainless mash tun, which has a great spigot welded on it, but we didn't know what to sanitize that...

    carbonation problems WHILE bottling

I'm on my 20th batch of the year, and had a really weird experience. I should say, though, that this is only my second belgian dubbel, and only my third or fourth high gravity brew. The brew: standard belgian dubbel. a few lbs of rock candy in the wort. wyeast 1762 belgian abbey II strain...
