    Homebrewing Blog

Mine is in my signature. i neglected it for a bit and came back to it yesterday. I tend to brew about twice a month so there ought to be more on there... I'm just lazy, I guess! My buddy and I who brew together are still trying to think of a brewery name. joe

    whole foods "beer class"?

At the WF closest to my house here in So. Cal. they have tastings, and it may be something like that... been to one with Lagunitas which was great, as was the Russian River one (how could those be bad?). I have been to a couple others, but it was a while back. I don't live all that close to the...

First competition, the results are in!

Thanks, dude! I was super stoked to pull a 35 on it. I didn't expect it, but the 120 IBUs (according to Beer Smith) won them over, I think :D joe

    So who's brewing this weekend?

This past weekend my buddy and I brewed a Dunkelweizen and bottled our CA common. I'm excited! joe

First competition, the results are in!

My local brew club had a competition a couple of weeks ago and I thought I'd throw a couple beers in the mix to get some feedback. I turned in a DIPA and a Belgian Wit. There were three judges and scores were averaged to get the final score to see how the beers would be placed in the top...

    6.5 gallon plastic conical fermenter

Hess gives you instructions on how to make your own. Requires a bit o' DIY spirit, but compared to anything else you'll likely find they're dirt cheap. http://hessbrewing.blogspot.com/2010/06/conicalus-for-restivus.html joe

    probably a dumb question

I've been a little unclear on whether or not I need to strain everything out from the boil kettle when I move it to the carboy for fermentation. We just dump everything in without straining. I don't know if it makes a difference, but so far our beer has been delicious. joe

    Which kind of mug?

Very cool glasses. I especially like the DFH ones. Even though I'm looking for something unbranded I may have to grab a few of the DFH ones. Not a bad price at all. joe

    Which kind of mug?

No logo yet, and no name. I think we're still sort of searching for our brewing identity as we're pretty new still. joe

    Which kind of mug?

I like the way you think. joe

    Which kind of mug?

You make a good argument... :D I would like to have them on display when I get my own space. Maybe drink from them. But right now we're brewing beer in my buddies garage. It also gets a bit more complicated as my pops has been sober for 22 years or so. joe

    Which kind of mug?

My dad was stationed in Germany in the 70's and collected a *bunch* of big steins. I believe they're in a box at my grandmothers house. I'll have to ask him about them. I'm not sure I'd want to use them though. joe

    Which kind of mug?

I know that there are proper beer glasses for specific types of beers, but I'm looking for a couple of "Brewers Mugs." Sort of special Mugs for me and my brewing partner since, well... we brewed the beer. Everyone else can drink out of random pint glasses :) Three automatically come to mind...

A lot of craft beers seem dull now

I feel sorry for y'all without any good local craft brews. Maybe I'm just spoiled here in So. Cal., but I've got access to some really great brews year-round. joe

    Distilled Water?

We've used distilled water for all of our brews so far (extract w/ steeped grains) and it's fine. We also use yeast nutrient if you're worried about your little yeasties not being happy. The water here in OC isn't the greatest. Maybe when we jump to all grain we'll get a charcoal filter, but so...

i just plain don't believe this

My girlfriend likes beer more than wine. I like both pretty much equally. Some days I'm in the mood for wine, some days I'm in the mood for beer. It's okay to like both ;) joe

Ontario CA / Central Coast: Recommendations?!

It's a bit further South, but if you want to go out of your way a little bit to find two fantastic breweries in Orange County you can check out The Bruery and Bootleggers. joe
