Kettle Sour....Super Rad by Alvarado Street

Okay, I understand sours are tough for the big guys because it takes equipment that is designated solely for “sour” beers. But I have seen a few beers lately from some local brewery’s that I know are not doing that. For example Super Rad by Alvarado Street Brewery. It is claimed to be a Kettle...

    First time using EZ-Cap bottles

Well seems to be another successful bottling day. Made up a case and a half of 22's and a case of EZ-cap 500ml bottles. Hoping they carb up, not sure why I decided to try something different but I was at the LHBS and saw a case sitting there and thought, "eff-it" had my son grab a case, Star...

Another Brew Day w/ High OG

Well, for a second weekend in a row I ended up with a high OG, supposed to hit 1.064, I ended up with 1.074. But I looked at my beersmith notes and I found two things in common. Both recipes were 90 minute Mash 90 minute boil, and both times I had a mash temp that was about 8-10 degrees to...

    Starter Problem

I put my 2 liter starter on my stir plate yesterday around noon, White Labs Belgian Abby Yeast. Everything was going great, went to bed left it on the stir plate. Woke up to a mess....goopy dough all down the sides of my flask:(. I just stopped stir plate, cleaned beaker and put in fridge to...

    Brewed Yesterday: Nelson Saison

I was hoping to break in my new SS BrewTech Brew bucket yesterday but while sanitizing I discovered a pin hole in the side. So that really pissed me off but the rest of the day went well. I made a Nelson S. hopped Saison. 8lbs Belgian Pils 2lbs white wheat .25lbs Special B 1 oz Willemette...

First Timer Here: Following EdWorts Recipe

Picked up 6 gallons of Costco's fresh squeezed apple juice today....going to follow EdWorts recipe. But I was thinking of using English ale yeast instead of Montrachet wine yeast. Any thoughts on that?? Anything else a newbie cider/Apfelwine guy needs to know before I move forward?

How long should I Dry Hop?

I made a Bells Two Hearted clone on December 6th, I left it in the primary until the 23rd, little more than two weeks (17 days to be exact). I racked to a secondary and added an ounce of centennial pellets. How long should I wait before bottling/kegging? I usually follow the 1-2-3 method, 1 week...

    Milk Stout is Done

I think it looks amazing but I am my own worst critic when it comes to taste.....I can almost taste hint if olive or alcohol and it's killing me. Wish I had some local buddies who knew about beer that I could give some to.

    Very Good Lagunitas IPA Clone

I followed the recipe in my "Clone Brews" book and I couldn't be happier! This has got to be the closest clone recipe I have ever found to the real thing. My numbers were all right on target. I did have to use Magnum hops in place of Horizon but u can't tell a huge difference. I am going to...

    Kegged For the First Time

Well I think it went well. I am going with the ole set it at 30psi for three days trick. My Lagunitas IPA Clone came in at 6.68% ABV. Right where I was aiming for. The recipe said 5.7% and I added a 1% boost. I just hope it carbonates well, taste awesome right now, little bitter bite at the end...

    Pre Boil Gravity

Is pre boil gravity important? I ask because I am brewing only AG now and have never worried about taking a pre boil gravity reading.....I know to test my wort with iodine for conversion but what will pre boil gravity do for me??? If it is high or low what could I do to adjust it???

    Adventures in Homebrewing Order

Just ordered a new Mash Tun and HLT from AIH, very good price! Has anyone here use AIH's igloo system? They advertise that they have a very good false bottom. Anyways I recommend them based on price and will let everyone know how they work herein a few weeks.

    Mini-Brew fermenter

Hey everyone, was wondering what everyone's thoughts are in the Mini-brew conical fermenter (plastic one from Cali)? I am considering picking one up but haven't heard a lot about them. Would love to hear from someone that has used one or knows someone who has. Thanks!
