Stirplate with 5V computer fan and arduino

Sure. Code at the bottom. The plate works fine. It is a little finicky, sometimes the stir bar will just jump around so usually check on it twice a day or so when it is running and sometimes have to shift the position of the container to get it to spine optimally, but when it does I get a...

    Better Use For Spent Grains?

Spent grain waffles. I literally just make waffle batter from the first recipe I find online and add 2 cups of spent grain. It uses about even amounts of flour and spent grains. It makes more waffles and they have a a really good texture. I really do prefer these to regular waffles. I...

Fellow homebrewers, meet my new beer engine . . .

Looks like it has been a little while for action on this thread. I have seen some negative reviews for the rocket pump most people have used for their beer engines. Has anyone tried this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BGJX88/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 It doesn't look as much like a...

Anyone use mini-kegs or 1gallon kegs with a beer engine

I've searched for info on this both on here and google and come up with a few leads, but most of them a year or two old at least. I've only bottled in the past, but I recently went on a trip to Scotland and fell in love with cask-conditioned ales. I think the creaminess is what did it. I've...

    Guinness Lager

So is this stuff as bad as beer advocate says, or are they trashing it just because it isn't traditional? Has anyone tried it yet? I find people's reaction to this sort of thing interesting. It may be a little outside what they do well, but I can't fault a company for introducing a new...

Some interesting first year growing observations

This is my first year growing and I am very pleased with the results. I am in Central VA and grew two cascade vines up the back of my deck of my townhouse. I read that you shouldn't expect much production first year, but I have now had 3 harvests, with the one today being the best. I'm...

    Lion Red Clone?

He kind of did. I have a little experience with NZ beers from visiting there. Lion Red was drinkable, and not terrible, but I would also compare it to US macrobrews. Could be worse, he could have asked you to clone Export Gold.

    Brewer's Gold Hops

I've never used them as whole hops before, but I have used brewer's gold pellets as the bittering addition in a belgian tripel and a saison. I have heard they can give a black currant like flavor and I would agree based on my brews. They both turned out well, so I can't complain.

    Simple American Amber Ale

That sounds like a delicious late summer/early fall beer. I'd definitely keep the willamette in the mix. I've never worked with liberty, what kind of characteristics is it supposed to add?

Good yeast for saison fermenting @ ~82f?

I'm currently (literally right now) drinking a rye saison that I fermented at 85 with saison dupont yeast. No bubblegum whatsoever, some pepper instead. In fact it is delicious. Mine was an actual bottle culture, but I suspect the wyeast version would do the same. The only thing is that it...

    chimay triple clone

I'm a big Chimay tripel fan as well. http://hopville.com/recipe/688429/belgian-tripel-recipes/white-label# This was my first attempt to make a similar beer. I used wyeast 1214 but next time I will probably culture. I've read some stuff to suggest that 1214 and WLP500 may not be as...

    Corn ale anyone?

I was at Starr Hill last week and sampled that one(my brother was visiting and we went brewery hopping). I love a lot of their brews, but I have to say that one in particular was pretty bad. I don't mind a little corn sweetness in a beer, but the flavor is somewhat overbearing in that one...

What to do with 3 lbs of special B?

Hmm, you all bring up some interesting options. RIS or other stout is interesting. The other problem I should mention is that I had planned on brewing two other things before this, probably this weekend. May be at least 2 weeks before I can brew using the special B. Looks like I need to find...

What to do with 3 lbs of special B?

I have an awesome brother. He doesn't brew, but before coming for a visit, he went to his LHBS and bought some stuff for me that they don't have in my town. One thing I asked for was 6 oz or so of Special B, which my LHBS doesn't stock. He came with 3 lbs of the stuff, crushed. Anyway, was...

Rustic American Farmhouse Ale recipe - Help with yeast, hops

Fate intervened. My brother came to visit for the weekend to check out the local microbrews, and he left me a sixer of oberon. I'll culture that and use it.

Rustic American Farmhouse Ale recipe - Help with yeast, hops

I'm working on a recipe for next weekend that I need some input on. I call this "Moorefield Farmhand's Ale" after the farm in Kentucky where my father grew up. They didn't brew, but the inspiration is to use ingredients that they would have if they brewed. It is kind of like a dirty Kentucky...

max vols of CO2 for Samuel Smith bottles?

Old thread, but just in case the OP still wants an answer . . . I recently bottled a Belgian Tripel with half the batch at about 3 volumes in regular beer bottles, and half of the batch in at a little over 4 volumeschampagne bottles/begian 33cl bottles, and a few sam smith cider bottles. They...

    2011 Hop Garden Picture Thread

Thanks. I imagine in Chicago the harvest might be a little later than here in Virginia. It sounds like there is the beginnings of some commercial hops growing around here, at least on the small scale. I know at least one local brewery growing and using their own, all cascade.

    2011 Hop Garden Picture Thread

Just had my first harvest for the year (and first ever). I just planted this year, but am quite encouraged by the productivity. I only picked the ones that seemed ready and I probably have twice this left on the vines with new bines still appearing. I trained them to go up the ropes and then...

Skunky taste/aroma in belgian tripel when racking to secondary

Not sure anyone will be interested, but wanted to give another update on this batch. All the pro's on here will fuss at me, I'm sure, but I decided to pop one of this batch open tonight to see what it is like, knowing that it will improve with some age. I was extremely happy with the result...
