OG is off even after pre Boil and Boil volume is spot on

Ok so I had a preboil volume of 6.9 Gallons and gravity of 1.058. Took that with a sample and old fashioned Hydrometer. Into the fermenter at 6 gallons and my tilt says it’s 1.056 OG. I’m stumped and yes I calibrated in water before I dropped it in. Any thoughts on where my issue is other...

No signs of fermentation except the Gravity reading

Has anyone ever had this happen? No foam, no Krausen just an OG of 1.051 and after pitching another round of yeast to no avail I was ready to give up and I took a gravity reading of 1.010 I mean no signs whatsoever and it’s in a 6 gal glass caribou.

Heat stick for my sparge kettle

So I’m trying to move my entire brewing process indoors and have a grainfather for most of the process. Bought a heat stick to supplement it because anyone who has ever tried to get a big beer to a boil on it knows it is tough on the American version. Anyway I’m thinking I should be able to...

    Back after multil- kid hiatus

So I did a lot of home brewing in early 2000s but after my second kid arrived found it was really hard to find the time to do it. I stashed all my equipment away though and broke it out 3 weeks ago to brew my first batch in over 10 years. I totally messed it up by miscalculating the mash...

    Wort Chiller advice

So I just got a keggle and now I am finding that my piddly little immersion chiller isn't going to cut it for 10 Gal batches. I've pretty much decided that the Shirron Wort Plate Chiller is what I want to get due to price and the speed in which it chills the wort, but I'm not sure what else I...

    Craigs list score

I never would have thought to look at Craigs list if it wasn't for this forum. Anyway, I got myself a chest freezer on the cheap for $50. It's a small one, but it could either 1) hold 2 fermenters for temperature controlled fermentation or 2) hold 3-4 kegs and a CO2 tank. I happen to have...

    Low efficiency problems.

At least I got to brew twice today, but as I'm still new to AG I'm having problems with my efficiency. I brewed an Arrogant Bastard Clone recipe last night with a target OG of 1.078 at 75% efficiency I ended up with 1.069 65%(Better than my 1st attempt of 1.060) Today I brewed an IPA...

    Drinking and writing

As I finish my 2nd Dogfish Head 90-Min IPA and type up my current business seminar paper, I was curious if any other students out there find they do their best work after a few brews? I stared at my computer for the first hour before I had my 1st beer and after that the words just started...

    Propane Burner Recommendations?

SWMBO has decided to buy me a burner for a graduation present (well I asked her to buy it anyway). I'm about ready to start 5 Gal AG brews, but I want something I can kick up to 10-15 gals someday. Any recommendations? My only budget constraints are it should be under $100. I want...

    1st Barleywine

I'm doing a partial Mash Barleywine on Monday and I'm going to start it on the Trub leftover from the Caramel Creme in my primary. Even though my Barleywine recipe calls for a White Labs California Ale Yeast and I used a German Ale yeast for the Caramel Creme. Any problems with this? I...

    Question about reading SG

So I tried my first non-kit beer today and went for the Caramel Cream Ale. It seems to have gone very well, but when I read the Hydrometer it read 1.14. Way too high and I can't imagine why except that I measured the 2 Gallon Wort that I brewed and added another 3 Gal of Cold Water to the...

    New Brewer in Jersey

Hi all. I just recently did my first batch at a brew-on site facility and enjoyed it so much I bought a home kit from Mr. Beer. I'm going to upgrade that to a 5 gallon kit once I get the hang of the first few batches. I've got a nice Honey Blueberry ale fermenting right now and my 1st batch...
