Year old grime and bacteria in Carboys

So... I recently found two carboys in my basement that I had misplaced and not cleaned properly. I'm fairly inclined to just throw them out since they have black grime in them (I'm guessing bacteria), but I just wanted to put it out there to you guys to see if I can rescue them with a VERY...

    Dry Hops Schedule

I just finished brewing my first all grain batch last night. Did NOT go as i was hoping it would, but all in all - valuable lessons learned and it will probably be drinkable. To that end I was thinking about dry hopping it w/ an ounce each of cascade and amarillo. What is the best time to add...

    Five Star 5.2

Thanks for your input guys. I decided against buying the 5.2. I ended up not needing it. My mash ph came in around 5.5 to 5.6. Hopefully it comes out as a success.

    Five Star 5.2

I'm about ready to start my first all grain batch, and I was considering buying 5.2. Using palmer's calculations in How to brew, i think that my mash PH will be somewhere around 5.8. In his book, palmer mentions that he doesn't like using phosphoric acid because it reacts w/ the calcium. What...

    Mash Tun - Using PVC

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. Very glad about the CPVC suggestion, thanks. As far as the cuts go, how much pipe do you cut? If I'm going to build a rectangular manifold, should i only cut the 4 long pipes, or is it more of a, "If it isn't a joint, cut it" kind of a deal?

    Mash Tun - Using PVC

Hi guys, I'm about to go build a mash tun today so I can get cracking on my first all grain batch. I'm thinking of doing a 4 pipe slotted PVC pipe manifold. Does anyone have any experience using PVC to build a manifold? I would really appreciate any advice for the build or criticism of why PVC...

    Alcohol Transportation

lol, probably wouldn't end well That's an interesting move, but unfortunately, I haven't started kegging yet :( (I do have a brewshed about to start that I will def throw in the DIY forums and will make a keezer to go in there, so it won't be too long). Since it isn't going to happen for a...

    Alcohol Transportation

Hey guys, I can't find the pertinent laws for Pennsylvania, so I figured I would just ask my favorite forum. My sister is 20 and would like to transport some of my new homebrew within the state for her boyfriend's 21st Bday. Is it legal for her to transport the beer by herself or does she have...

    Granite ware

Thanks for the help guys, I'm really just exploring my options at this point. Speaking of the stainless, I saw these on amazon as well. The reviews seem to say that it's an 18/0 steel. Would that be alright for a BK, or should I look for something else?

    Granite ware

Has anyone ever used one of these stockpots as a boil kettle? I'm using a 6 Gallon aluminum stockpot right now, but want to move to all grain so I need a bigger pot. Thanks for your help

Thanks guys, I'll tell him that. I appreciate the help

    Pre Hopped Extract

My dad bought a can of pre-hopped Cooper's Irish Stout LME for his first brew. The guys at the store told him to just add a lb of DME and LME to pre-boiled water and then pitch the yeast. Is that true or does he have to boil his un-hopped DME to get the hot break?

    Pin Lock vs. Ball Lock

Thanks guys. I'm probably going to just do a standard Sanyo conversion, so it sounds like the ball lock kegs are the way to go for those. Then again, this is probably a few months down the road, but I figured that it's never to early to start getting more information. Thanks for your help.

    Pin Lock vs. Ball Lock

I'm just getting into home brewing (first brew day is sunday, Can't wait!:ban:). I've been drooling over the Kegerator Porn thread and have started looking at corny keg vendors to get an idea of how much it would cost once I start kegging. I keep coming across the 2 different styles of kegs, the...

    Starting Equipment

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking as well. As far as my first brew though, I didn't think that it was necessary, especially since I'm probably just going to make my wort chiller myself. I de-railed the thread a little bit w/ my discussion of Galvanic Corrosion, I'm probably going to go to the store...
