Who Has Experience With Wyeast 1388 - Belgian Strong Ale?

I started it off at 67° for the first 2 days. I bumped it to 69° on Wed and plan on bumping it to 71° tomorrow. It is pretty active but I did not need to put a blow-off tube on it. My OG was 1.070 so it is going to take a few days. What is a good temp to stop the ramp-up?

Who Has Experience With Wyeast 1388 - Belgian Strong Ale?

I am going to assemble the starter(s) this evening and brew Sat or Sun. Picked up what I needed from my LHS last night. Am curious as to why to cold (66°). Does the yeast multiply better at low temp?

Who Has Experience With Wyeast 1388 - Belgian Strong Ale?

After the first debacle, I brewed a small golden ale (1.042 OG) with the Whitle Labs version as a starter for another Golden strong. I washed the yeast from the small one and will make 2 starters from that for the pitch in this new batch. That plus the added control of my chamber should do...

Who Has Experience With Wyeast 1388 - Belgian Strong Ale?

1388 is known to stall, Wyeast even states so on their website. I did a BGSA with an OG of 1.092 and it stalled at 1.060 after 2 weeks. I aerated and pitched more yeast and it still took 4 weeks (at 74 degrees) to an FG of 1.020. I get banana every time I drink it. Some of this was...

    Auber Instruments SYL 2352

I ran auto-tune a 2nd time and it did not take nearly as long. The probe is below the element so I do need to stir the contents to evenly distribute heat. Not sure if I will do a slow rotating mechanical paddle to stir or a pump to recirc. After the 2nd auto-tune, the unit heated to the set...

    Auber Instruments SYL 2352

Brewing again with this rig today. I ran autotune but not sure it was successful. How long does it take to complete it (nothing in the manual). I may have cycled the power to it prior to completion. When it was tuning, it took the temp up to the set temp 170 and kept on going to 180. It...

    Auber Instruments SYL 2352

I will try to get a chance to mess with it in the next day or two. The probe is just slightly below the element. I have stirred it up as it is heating to distribute the heat evenly. It is probably operating in manual mode as I do not recall messing with that when I set it up a while back. I...

    Auber Instruments SYL 2352

I have a HLT setup using a Auber Instruments SYL-2352 controlling an SSR and a 5500W element. The rig works to some extent but it does not control the temp very well. I was brewing today and set the desired temp to 170 and left it alone. I came back to it 20 minutes later and the temp was...

Is the season officially a bust?

I just finished harvesting all my cones here in NJ. I got a whopping total of 8.5 oz from 20 plants. I am going to scrap the whole "organic" thing with the hops. These plants need nutrition. Possibly some alpaca manure (available locally) will do the trick.

    Propagating from Hop Cuttings

I have cut ryzomes in the fall. I wrapped them in a damp paper towel or cloth and placed them in a zip-lock bag. Stored them in the frig and planted them in spring. They grew this year, did not produce anything; but I hope that next year they will.

The hops are taking over my garden! How do I transplant them?

I would leave them alone for now. Later this fall, take the new bines that are coming from unexpected places and bury them under several inches of soil or mulch. Tie strings around them and leave on the surface to mark them prior to burial to . Next spring, (early) dig them up and cut the...

Is the season officially a bust?

I have 20 plants Centennial and Cascade mixture. Probably 12 of them are 2nd year or older. I will be fortunate if I get a pound of yield from all of them. Very bad year here in NJ. None of my normal garden plants did well either.

    Stout Ice Cream Help

Some people at the recent brew club meeting did just that. (made floats). I took several bottles of the stout used in the ice cream and used it (the stout ice cream) to make floats. I sampled and it was pretty awesome.
