    Glass Carboys vs Better Bottles?

I cleaned up a really nasty Better Bottle (Imperial Stout, four days of blow off) by first soaking it in one gallon of warm water with a scoop of OxyClean, and the bottle inverted. The next day I emptied that, added two cups of water and an old rag. I swished and swirled and it cleaned up...

    You're no longer a n00b when...

    152. Your wife sees a set of glasses with your last name on it and orders them because they're Cooper's (and she KNOWS that it's not only your last name, but a major brew supply company). Schweet!

Did HB make you a "Beer Snob"

Yes... it has. I have always appreciated good beer, and I know what I like. It's interesting that since I've been homebrewing (less than a year), even my older brother (who likes beer, but is not a snob) has been reporting beer finds to me and telling me how much he likes what he's discovered...

    when to add honey?

I added two pounds to my Grand Cru Ale about 15 minutes before the end of the boil. Not strong at all, but a subtle flavor. Tony

    Wort cooling idea

I put my brew pot into my stainless steel sink with ice and water and stir the wort. The water never gets "warm", and the wort is usually cool enough to mix into the fermenter within 15 minutes, maybe less. Today I pitched yeast 45 minutes after I finished boiling... 15 minutes to cool and...

    HELP!!!! How did this happen?

Wow... that's quite an adventure. I had quite an overflow with my Imperial Stout, but it didn't blow up. I run a hose into my secondary from the top of my primary, and put the dry air lock on my secondary. While this isn't for blow off normally, it's fortunate that it was in place like that...

Tale of the first time disaster.

I overthunk my first brew, too. I decided my first 5-gallon batch was going to be a recipe, not a kit. So I gathered all the ingredients for the Grand Cru Ale in Papazian's Joy of Homebrewing. I read that recipe probably 20 times before I decided to brew it. Super-smart me with my golden...

    What's Brewing This Weekend? (6/15-17)

My plans are to brew a partial mash Nut Brown Ale. Sometimes plans change... I also need to work on some things around the house. :-| Tony

    what is my ELI?

    > i'm dousing my right arm with it to hopefully kill whatever nasty crap is living on it. I quite nearly spewed fried rice all over my monitor when I read this. ROFL!! Your ELI is about the same as it would be by just opening the fermenter. Personally I would have donned a big rubber...

My new labels - Thanks go to billpa!

The letters likely correspond to months, and the numbers to years... bottling dates, me thinks. Tony

    God Damn fruitflys!

Here's my recipe for attracting/killing them: 1) Make sure there is no open fruit/juice/attractant (especially in the trash) 2) Mix 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of vinegar and a couple of drops of dishwashing detergent into one cup (8 ounces) of water. Stir to dissolve the sugar...

How much better is your all-grain brew?

    > Oops, I just did. Way to go! > I have made some damn good beer, though. If you weren't in TX, I'd want to test this claim. ;-) Tony

How much better is your all-grain brew?

Although I have not done an AG batch (but have done partial mash), I don't see my approach to doing so any more or less about just making good beer. In all of my planning, I have looked at recipes and ingredients of beers that I want to make and drink. I'm one of those people who wants to...

    bottling high gravity home brew

Interesting thread since I just brewed an Imperial Stout. The OG was 1.090 though, so I feel as though I'll have less of an issue. I forgot to sparge my grains in a partial mash. :-| It'll be good either way. It's currently making quite a mess via the blow off tube. Tony

    Fermentation Activity

What Death dude said. The first time I saw something that looked like it could be mold on top of my beer, I got my reading glasses and saw that it was very very tiny bubbles in a little grouping and the way that the light was hitting it looked like mold fuzz. When I could SEE it, I knew it...

    Honey Ale.

My I suggest adding the honey later in the boil if you aren't already? Tony

    A good Belgian Wit Beer

Just a little thought that Wit doesn't have to be wheat. :o) I recently did one that used Belgian Wit yeast: 5 pounds extra light DME 2 pounds honey, light 1 ounce sweet orange peel, dried 2 ounces whole coriander seeds 1.5 ounces Hallertauer (60 minutes) 0.5 ounce Hallertauer (10...

    Basic cider recipe?

With my first cider, I used a Wyeast Draft Yeast and it worked wonderfully well. My wife loves the cider... it was a two-gallon batch.

    Hops/chunks in my bottled beer

Removing sediment is the basic purpose of a secondary. Are you using any kind of sieve/strainer when transferring from brewpot to primary?

    Another bottle santizing question

You shouldn't worry about it. Relax, have a homebrew. StarSan has very few aftereffects, and the bubbling helps it get into all the nooks and crannies. It's no-rinse for a reason. You're beer will be fine.
