Ice pak possibly leaked into mash water. OH NO.

So Sunday during my brew session I wasn't paying attention and my mash water hit 180 degrees so to cool it down I threw in the ice pak that came with my yeast and swirled it around, mashed in flawless brew day. Well this morning I asked my daughter where her lunch ice pak was from yesterday...

Dry Hopping, some float some sink WHY?

Ok, so when I dry hop, which is on most beers, usually 2 oz per 5 gallons some pellet hops sink to the bottom after 10-14 days and I get a nice clean rack to the keg, and other recipes the pellets refuse to sink. This recipe that is refusing to sink is 1 oz simcoe and 1 oz centennial the last 10...

    Competition Questions

I am entering a small non sanctioned competition and am having a hard time choosing a category number. It is a brown ale much like a southern English brown but the OG is higher than a Southern @ 1.055. The beer came out great. The form i'm using is from the BJCP site. Thanks in advance

Lower mash temp = more body????

I was @ a beer fest yesterday talking with the head brewer of a local microbrewery and commented on the maltiness of his beer how I liked it and never seem to get it even if I mash @ a higher temp EG 156-158 and he told me to mash lower like 150-152 for more body and malt flavor. Isn't this the...

8 Gallons fresh maple sap, what to make?

I just got 8 gallons of fresh maple sap, any ideas for a recipe? My friend told me I should use it within a week. I was thinking and amber ale, not too heavy on the hops. I have no experience with sap so I don't know what differences it makes, hopefully someone will chime in. Thanks

Efficiency Calculations (cold break or not)

When calculating efficiency do you guys account for the 1/2 gallon +/- left in the brew pot after whirlpool and siphon into the primary, I usually leave behind at least 1/2 a gollon of cold break and hop sludge. That 1/2 gallon brings efficiency up around 6-8 % using beersmith. For those of you...

    Vacation Pale Ale

I made this pale ale for vacation and I have to say It is by far my best beer yet. I came up with the recipe from many of the Sierra Nevada recipes out there.
