    pH adjustments post-fermentation - suggestions?

I have a batch of beer that I knew was too low pH when I added the yeast. It fermented fine, but now I have a faint, lingering tartness to it from the low pH. I should have adjusted it in the boil, and I never. Stupid. Can anyone suggest something to raise the pH of my finished beer that...

Polyester (PET) braid in a mash tun

I came across an interesting product (http://www.mcmaster.com/#2837k14/=4w17ts) an PET expandable mesh that is heat resistant. It is inexpensive, easy to cut and work with, is expandable, and has a very nice braid pattern that won't easily damage. It is not food-grade, however, since its...

Any BJCP Judges in the Crowd?

Just curious how many judges there were on HBT. Or judges-in-prep, for that matter. Feel free to respond to the poll and post a comment. I'll tally it up at the end.

    Free access to brewing journal

Well, if you want to get REALLY geeky about brewing science, you have to hit the research literature. Pretty technical stuff, but it is years ahead of even the most recent books out there. The Institute of Brewing and Distilling runs one of the top brewing journals that publishes original...

    Best Brewing Science Books

So, what are everyone's favourite books on brewing science? I own the two really popular ones: George Fix (1999) Principles of Brewing Science Lee Janson (1996) Brew Chem 101 There is a lot of useful information in these books, but neither is an outstanding read. Both books suffer from...

Single Tier - Grant or No Grant?

I put together a recirc system for my mash tun so that I wouldn't have to stir my steam-injected step mashes. I am in the process of building a brew stand and moving away from a gravity-fed system. Since I have the pump and lines anyways, I thought I might as well outfit everything with...

Brewing with tap water -- from the HOT faucet

Chime in with your opinion and your thoughts: should you brew with hot tap water or not? It's tempting since you can shave some time heating your mash and sparge water up to temp, but I know some will cringe at the thought of lead contamination or something.

    Anybody playing Rock Band 2?

Got a PS3 at the beginning of October with Rock Band. Immediately bought Rock Band 2 on Oct. 19th when it was released. Hardly been on HBT in the last month, because of it all. I thought brewing was addictive! Rock Band is waaaayyyyyyy too much fun! Anyone else playing??

Thanks HBT! (you helped me pass my BJCP exam)

[My apologies in advance if I come across like I am bragging -- but I am really excited about this!] I just wanted to pass along a special thanks to the whole community here for the wealth of information that I have learned from you all. As it turns out, I actually passed my first BJCP exam...

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

The question of how to improve efficiency often comes up, and I sometimes get PMs asking advice. Rather than repeat the same information, I thought I would write my thoughts down in this thread so that it could be referenced in the future. Efficiency issues are often difficult to diagnose --...

Hybrid Batch Sparging for High Gravity Brews

It is relatively common knowledge that extract efficiency in batch sparging is highly dependent on the volume of sparge water used in the brew. For high gravity recipes, the volume of grain is so great that a large volume of water is needed to mash the grains, and only a small volume of sparge...

Source for NG burners in Canada?

I am moving in a few weeks, and today I was looking at some pictures of the new house that I shot during the home inspection. I spotted something very cool in the garage (see the lower left of the photo below): Closeup: So I think I will have gas in the new garage. Sweet! (Now only if...

Where did all the book reviews go?

Looks like they were purged to the Archives. That's strange because there were some very new threads in here. :(

    Anyone have this article?

I spotted this article in the BJCP exam study guide: Wolfe, E.W., "Unbeknownst to the right honourable judge: Or how common judging errors creep into organized beer evaluations" Brewing Techniques, v. 4(2), 56-59 (1996). Looks like an interesting read. Does anyone have a copy or know of an...

Let's talk about Foam Control drops (aka Fermcap)

Foam control, or Fermcap drops are a product designed to prevent boil-overs in the brew kettle, and to prevent blow-offs in the starter/fermenter. The product will not harm head retention or produce off-flavours in the final beer. My recent experience with this product confirms these claims...

    Clean beerstone in a keg?

So I am out of PBW and can't get it locally. Tried OxiClean with no luck. Any other suggestions on what I could use to get beerstone off the fittings of a corny keg?
